Attention is the foundation for play, learning, communication and emotional regulation. From listening to a story to solving a problem, a child’s ability to focus develops gradually and is shaped by brain maturation, sensory experiences and daily routines. Understanding what is typical helps parents set realistic expectations and support attention in ways that are nurturing and not stressful.
How Occupational Therapy Views Attention
From an OT perspective, attention is not just about “sitting still” or “trying harder.” It’s a complex skill that depends on how the brain processes information, regulates arousal and engages meaningfully in activity. Occupational therapists view attention as part of the broader executive function system, which includes working memory, self-regulation, and organisation. Attention is influenced by:
- Sensory processing: How the child registers and filters sensory input (sound, touch, movement, etc.)
- Arousal regulation: The ability to stay in an alert, calm, and engaged state

How to Support Attention at Home
