Hope Kids OT Partnership with Envisage
Hope Kids Occupational Therapy has become an official Victorian delivery partner for Envisage Families, Australia’s national evidence-based parent support program, extending its reach to Cantonese and Mandarin speaking families raising children with developmental concerns or disability. Through this partnership, Hope Kids OT facilitates the full five-week Envisage program directly with culturally and linguistically diverse, or CALD, communities across Melbourne, removing a language barrier that has historically kept many families from accessing this kind of structured, evidence-based support.
Background: What Envisage Is and Why Access Matters
Envisage Families is a free, government-funded parent support program developed collaboratively by the Australian Catholic University, McMaster University, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne. It is designed for parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 8 who have developmental concerns or a disability, and it runs as five structured weekly workshops covering early child and family development, parenting approaches, caregiver wellbeing, and communicating and connecting with services and community.
The program has been evaluated by its founding research partners and shown to have a positive effect on parents’ sense of empowerment, parenting confidence and capacity, and connectedness. However, a program’s evidence base only translates into real-world benefit if the families who need it can actually access and engage with it. For many CALD families, particularly those more comfortable in Cantonese or Mandarin than English, that access gap is significant. Concepts around disability, developmental delay and early intervention often carry different cultural framing across communities, and navigating that alongside a language barrier can leave families disengaged from support that would otherwise benefit them.
Hope Kids OT’s Role as an Envisage Delivery Partner
Hope Kids Occupational Therapy is listed among Envisage’s official Victorian partner organisations, joining a national network of allied health services, hospitals and community organisations delivering the program across the country. Two Hope Kids OT clinicians facilitate the program: Jane Chan, an occupational therapist fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin with clinical experience in both Hong Kong and Australia, and Director May Lee, who is fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay.
Having clinicians who can deliver the program in a family’s own language does more than translate the workshop content. It allows nuanced concepts, such as reframing a diagnosis through a strengths-based lens, or discussing caregiver wellbeing in a way that resonates with cultural expectations around parenting and family responsibility, to be communicated with the depth and sensitivity they require. This is consistent with Hope Kids OT’s broader clinical approach, which is built around a bilingual and multilingual clinician base supporting the practice’s culturally diverse client population across its five Melbourne locations.
What the Program Covers

Families participating in the Envisage program facilitated by Hope Kids OT work through five sequential workshops over five weeks, each building on the last:
1. Health and wellbeing in early child and family development, exploring how to approach concerns about a child’s development, diagnosis or disability while focusing on strengths and future possibilities.
2. Child and family development, examining how every child continues to grow and develop their own identity within their family and community, and how sibling, partner and extended family relationships factor into that.
3. Parenting as a dance led by the child, a framework for understanding parenting as a responsive, evolving interaction shaped by each family’s values and beliefs rather than a fixed set of rules.
4. Looking after myself, addressing caregiver wellbeing directly, with practical strategies for building resilience alongside the demands of caring for a child with additional needs.
5. Communicating, collaborating and connecting, focused on working effectively with healthcare professionals and building social and community connections that support the family over the long term.
Each workshop combines practical information with open group discussion, giving families the chance to connect with others navigating similar experiences, a component that Hope Kids OT’s Cantonese and Mandarin speaking facilitators are able to extend meaningfully to families who might otherwise never have found that peer connection in their own language.
A Partnership Grounded in Equity of Access
For Hope Kids Occupational Therapy, this collaboration reflects a clinical priority that has shaped the practice since its founding: that evidence-based early childhood support should not be limited to families who are fluent in English or familiar with the Australian health system. Bringing a nationally validated, government-funded program to Cantonese and Mandarin speaking families in their own language is one concrete way of closing that gap, and it sits alongside the practice’s broader work supporting CALD families across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
